By Brenda L. Storey, Esq.
With the new year upon us, I like to look back and reflect on all for which I am grateful in the last year. What stands out the most are the acts of kindness. One client had a friend pay her fees and costs, knowing that she needed out but was unable to afford it. Luckily, the court awarded her fees and costs from the other side, so she could reimburse that giving friend. I recalled attending a seminar, and as the speaker was telling a horrific story from her own life, she looked out in the audience and complimented my outfit. Now that is putting others first! Then, I warmly remembered my sweet daughter writing a thank you note to my office manager, for all she did for me. That was quite the proud moment for this mom.
As part of our office Christmas celebration, I buy gifts for my wonderful staff that reflect memories from the year. With my thankful heart, I found a daily journal entitled “Good Days Start With Gratitude Journal.” How perfect is that?!? The intro reads, “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.” Yes, that sums it all up for me.
The journal challenges the owner to list three things for which he/she is grateful each day, and then there is a weekly prompt of “what were the highlights of your week?” Just jotting these down on a regular basis gave me a warm feeling of appreciation for all that I have. So, my new year’s resolution is to journal every day, and appreciate all the people with whom I am blessed to know. As the journal reminds me, “Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.”
So I close with my entry for today. Today I am grateful for 1) my clients and staff, 2) my family, and 3) the good Lord above.
Wishing you all a kind new year!
